Life, Myth, and Art in Ancient Rome, Allan, Tony

Life, Myth, and Art in Ancient Rome
Los Angeles J. Paul Getty Museum 2005 0892368217 / 9780892368211 Paperback Fine 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall
144 pp., illus. (some col.), biblio., index; 26 cm. Firm binding, clean inside copy. OVERSIZE! No priority/international, except by special arrangement. Richly illustrated with colour plates. "Inspired by the achievements of the ancient Greeks, the Romans made their city the center of an empire unsurpassed in size and influence for more than a thousand years. Its rich legacy shaped the medieval world and continues to amaze us today. Life, Myth, and Art in Ancient Rome celebrates the many achievements of Roman culture and delves into its fascinating dark side. Romans erected structures so well-built and engineered that they still stand millennia later, yet these same buildings also showcased blood sports as public entertainment. The Romans instituted just government, impartial legal and political institutions, and concepts of citizenship, yet its population included slaves as well as patricians and plebeians, and was often riven by intrigue, superstition, and savagery. This volume is a richly illustrated introduction to a fascinating, at times paradoxical, civilization and its art and architecture, ranging from magnificent temples and aqueducts, to exquisite mosaics and jewelry. Placing the art in its cultural context, the author covers themes that have long inspired the Western imagination, including the rise and fall of emperors, the life and death of the gladiator, the belief in omens and prophecy, and, ultimately, the establishment of Christianity." - Publisher.

Patriotic Taste: Collecting Modern Art in Pre-Revolutionary Paris
New York Yale University Press 2002 0300089864 / 9780300089868 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Fine Collectible 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall
Cloth, gilt, 346 pp., illus. (some col.), biblio., index; 27 cm. Firm binding, clean inside copy. Dust jacket protected in a mylar book cover. OVERSIZE! No priority/air, except by special arrangement. Winner of the 2004 Mitchell Prize for the History of Art to the best art book category, awarded by the Mitchell Foundation for the History of Art. "During the final decades of the ancien régime, prominent collectors in Paris commissioned and collected French paintings of the period, works by Greuze, Fragonard, David, and others that together comprised 'l'école Française'--the French School. In this book, an eminent art historian discusses six of these collectors and the collections they assembled, showing that private patronage in this period was revitalized by this patriotic desire to collect contemporary art. Colin B. Bailey explains why a taste for modern art emerged at this time and how it was encouraged and fostered. Examining the relationship between artist and patron, he discusses the degree of influence these enlightened patrons and collectors expected to exercise when new works were being commissioned. Bailey shows that collectors of eighteenth-century French painting seem not to have made rigid distinctions between the various genres or styles of the Academy's practitioners. Instead, history paintings and genre paintings--both rococo and neo-classical--were exhibited proudly on their walls as superb examples of the French School. / Colin B. Bailey, chief curator at The Frick Collection, New York, is also the author of Renoir’s Portraits: Impressions of an Age, published by Yale University Press." - Publisher.

The Holy Grail: Imagination and Belief
Cambridge, MA Harvard University Press 2004 0674013905 / 9780674013902 1st Hardcover Fine Fine Collectible 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall
xiv, 463 pp., col. illus., biblio., index; 24 cm. Tight, clean copy. Dust jacket protected in a mylar book cover. "The elusive image of the Holy Grail has haunted the Western imagination for eight centuries. It represents the ideal of an unattainable yet infinitely desirable goal, the possibility of perfection. Initially conceived in literature, it became a Christian icon which has been re-created in a multitude of forms over time even though the Grail has no specific material attributes or true religious significance. Richard Barber traces the history of the legends surrounding the Holy Grail, beginning with Chrétien de Troyes's great romances of the twelfth century and the medieval Church's religious version of the secular ideal. He pursues the myths through Victorian obsessions and enthusiasms to the popular bestsellers of the late twentieth century that have embraced its mysteries. Crisscrossing the borders of fiction and spirituality, the quest for the Holy Grail has long attracted writers, artists, and admirers of the esoteric. It has been a recurrent theme in tales of imagination and belief which have laid claim to the highest religious and secular ideals and experiences. From Lancelot to Parsifal, chivalric romances to Wagner's Ring, T. S. Eliot to Monty Python, the Grail has fascinated and lured the Western imagination from beyond the reach of the ordinary world. / Richard Barber is one of Britain's leading authorities on medieval history and the author of The Penguin Guide to Medieval Europe and The Knight and Chivalry." - Publisher.

Manet and the American Civil War: The Battle of the U.S.S. Kearsarge and the C.S.S. Alabama
New York and New Haven, CT Metropolitan Museum of Art; Yale University Press 2003 0300099622 / 9780300099621 Soft Cover Fine 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall
86 pp., illus. (some col.), maps (some col.), biblio.; 28 cm. Published in conjunction with an exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art June 3 to August 17, 2003. Firm binding, clean inside copy. "This fascinating book focuses on The Metropolitan Museum of Art's recent acquisition, The 'Kearsarge' at Boulogne, by Edouard Manet (1832-1883). During the American Civil War, when Union forces blocked Confederate ports, the Confederacy countered by waging guerrilla warfare on Union merchant shipping. One of the most skilled Confederate raiders was the sloop-of-war Alabama. On June 19, 1864, the U.S.S. Kearsarge and the C.S.S. Alabama fought off the coast of Cherbourg, France. The Alabama sank less than two hours after the first shot was fired. The battle captured the attention of the French people, and Manet, who as a teenager had served in the French navy, raced to Boulogne to see the victorious Kearsarge. He painted a depiction of the battle (which he did not witness), now in Philadelphia, as well as a portrait of the Kearsarge, now in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. This volume contains essays about the Metropolitan's picture and five additional seascapes painted by Manet in Boulogne during the summer of 1864. Related works by other artists, photographs, and newspaper articles are also included. / David Degener is a naval historian, and Juliet Wilson-Bareau is an independent Manet scholar." - Publisher.

"Hogarth was one of the great eighteenth-century painters, a marvellous colourist and innovator at all levels of artistic expression. As a man he was rooted in his own time and his own society. We 'read' his satirical works - The Rake's Progress, Marriage-a-la-Mode - as we read a novel, and our pleasure increases with the number of details we notice and hidden jokes we understand. David Bindman provides an illuminating guide to the satires and a vivid and incisive study of the man and his art." - Publisher.
