Max Beckmann, Beckmann, Max; Rainbird, Sean (Edited by)

Max Beckmann
New York Museum of Modern Art 2003 0870702416 / 9780870702419 First U.S. Edition Hard Cover Fine Fine Exhibition Catalogue 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall
Cloth, 293 pp., illus. (some col.); 28 cm. Catalogue of an exhibition held at Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, Sept. 10, 2002-Jan. 6, 2003; Tate Modern, London, Feb. 12-May 5, 2003; MoMA QNS, New York, June 25-Sept. 30, 2003. MoMA ed. Firm binding, clean inside copy. Dust jacket protected in a mylar book cover. OVERSIZE! No priority/air, except by special arrangement. "Max Beckmann was among the greatest painters of the 20th century, yet no retrospective of his work has been mounted in the art capitals of New York, London, and Paris in over 30 years. Perhaps the lapse of attention has to do with the importance of abstraction in 20th-century art, and Beckmann's work is always figurative, simultaneously muscular and enigmatic and has enormous and unsettling power. Beckmann began his career as a naturalist and Symbolist in the period before World War I. After the war he developed a unique pictorial style that mixed expressionist color and gesture, mythological and mystical allegory, and the harsh new objectivity of his portrayal of modern life throughout the Nazi reign of terror. A prolific artist in painting, drawing, and printmaking--as well as a powerful sculptor--Beckmann created mysterious images and dense tableaux of unparalleled intensity and complexity during an odyssey that took him from his native Germany to Paris, Amsterdam, St. Louis, and New York. A new examination of Beckmann's role and reputation during the first half of the 20th century has been eagerly awaited. Making use of new scholarship and previously unavailable research materials, this book sheds light on Beckmann's work and his influence on and interactions with the artists of his day. Essays include discussions of Beckmann's Frankfurt cityscapes, his pictures from Italy, his triptychs, his group portraits, and his relationship with cultural politics in the 1920s and 1930s; texts and interviews by artists Leon Golub and Ellsworth Kelly; curator Robert Storr on 'The Beckmann Effect'; and artist William Kentridge on Beckmann's Death. This sumptuous volume is published on the occasion of the retrospective exhibition mounted jointly by the Tate Modern, Centre Georges Pompidou, and The Museum of Modern Art, New York. It is the first comprehensive exhibition of Beckmann's work to be seen in the United States since 1984, and the first in New York since 1964." - Publisher. Contributions by: Susanne Bieber, Barbara Buenger, Charles Haxthausen, Jill Lloyd, Nina Peter, Ortrud Westheider, Anette Kruszynski, Robert Storr.

Christian Schad and the Neue Sachlichkeit
New York and London W. W. Norton & Company, Inc. 2003 039332477X / 9780393324778 Hardcover Fine Fine Exhibition Catalogue 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall
Cloth, gilt, 259 pp., illus. (some col.), biblio., index; 30 cm. Published in conjunction with an exhibition at the Neue Galerie New York, Mar. 14-June 9, 2003. Firm binding, clean inside copy. Dust jacket protected in a mylar book cover. OVERSIZE! No priority/air, except by special arrangement. "The first collection in English to give a full accounting of Schad's peculiar genius. The 1920s German art movement 'New Objectivity' (Neue Sachlichkeit) created a stark and indelible portrait of German society. Along with Max Beckmann, Otto Dix, and George Grosz, artist Christian Schad is central to any appreciation of this fascinating period in both art and history. Schad is a contradictory character. For all his icy-cool realism, Schad's mesmerizing paintings are characterized by an intense engagement with his models. While he is best known as a realist, he is also credited by the Dadaists as the inventor of abstract photograms, or 'Schadographs.' Published in conjunction with an exhbition at the Neue Galerie in New York, Christian Schad and the Neue Sachlichkeit includes over 140 full-color reproductions of Schad's paintings, drawings, woodcuts and 'Schadographs.'" - Publisher.

x, 334 pp., illus., bib. notes, index; 26 cm. Tight, clean copy. "This selection of essays by a prominent art historian, critic, and curator of modern art examines the art and artists of the twentieth century who have operated outside the established art world. In a lucid and accessible style, Peter Selz explores modern art as it is reflected in, and has had an impact on, the tremendous transformations of politics and culture, both in the United States and in Europe. An authoritative overview of a neglected phenomenon, his essays explore the complex relationship between art at the periphery and art at the supposed centre, and how marginal art has affected that of the mainstream." - Publisher.
