Da collectie van het Stedelijk Museum, 1963-1973 = The Stedelijk Museum Collection, 1963-1973
Amsterdam Stedelijk Museum 1974 First Edition Soft Cover Good Handbook of the Collection 4to - over 9" - 12" tall
[88] pp., illus. (some col.); 28 cm. Text in English and Dutch. "This catalogue lists all works acquired by the museum in the period 1963-1973..." Good+. Firm binding, clean inside copy. Wraps lightly soiled, some edgewear at extremities. Age toning. Profusely illustrated with new acquisitions, showing the Stedelijk Musem's hunger for avant-garde art. As you might expect, many of the artists are Dutch, including members of CoBrA, the collective organized in Copenhagen, Brussels, and Amsterdam (with Karel Appel, Constant, Corneille, and Asger Jorn among its leading lights). Their paintings were expressionist and sometimes childlike/naive in execution, not unlike Jean Dubuffet's paintings, another artist collected by the museum. Other representatives of the European neo-avant-garde include Piero Manzoni, Lucio Fontana, and Yves Klein. The Stedelijk also acquired several important works of American post-war Abstract Expressionism and Pop art. Almost as interesting as the reproduction of works of art are the numerous installation views of the galleries, with museum visitors (in contemporary attire). With a short introductory essay on the social role of the museum.
