The Late Richard Dadd, 1817-1886, Allderidge, Patricia
1 Allderidge, Patricia
The Late Richard Dadd, 1817-1886
London Tate Gallery 1974 0900874783 / 9780900874789 Paperback Very Good Exhibition Catalogue 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall
172 pp., illus. (some col.), geneal. table, 2 maps, plan, ports. (some col.), biblio., index; 31 cm. Firm binding, gently creased spine. Clean inside copy. Age toning. OVERSIZE! No priority/air, except by special arrangement. One of the most bizarre painters of all time, the English artist Dadd murdered his father and spent the remainder of his life confined in England's lunatic asylum, Bethlehem Hospital, otherwise known as "Bedlam." Believed to be a schizophrenic, he painted weird pictures, often populated with fairies, notable for their horror vacui (obsessive need to cover an entire surface in an all-over fashion). This is the authoritative publication on this interesting artist.

Henry Darger
Munich and New York Prestel, in cooperation with the American Folk Art Museum 2009 379134210X / 9783791342108 1st Hardcover Very Good Fine Exhibition Catalogue Oblong
Cloth, gilt, 319 pp., illus. (chiefly col.), biblio.; 27 x 34 cm. Near fine. Firm binding, clean inside copy. Top edge lightly soiled. Fine DJ. OVERSIZE! No priority/international, except by special arrangement. "Self-taught and working in isolation until his death in 1973, Henry Darger realized an elaborate fantasy world of remarkable beauty and strangeness, through hundreds of paintings and an epic written narrative. Angel-like Blengins with butterfly wings, natural catastrophes, innocent girls, and murderous soldiers all appear in Darger's scenes, which are reproduced in this book in double-page and gatefold spreads. In the volume's introductory essay, Klaus Biesenbach examines the radical originality of Darger's art, including his use of collage, incorporation of religious themes and iconography, and frequent juxtaposition of innocence with violence. An essay by Brooke Davis Anderson illuminates Darger's source materials and techniques. Michael Bonesteel puts Darger's life in the context of his work and selects key texts to accompany the illustrations. The book also includes for the first time the text of Darger's History of My Life, the artist's autobiography. The only book of its kind, Henry Darger offers an authoritative, balanced, and insightful look at an American master." - Publisher.
