The Cabaret, Appignanesi, Lisa
4 Appignanesi, Lisa
The Cabaret
New Haven, CT Yale University Press 2004 0300105800 / 9780300105803 Revised and Expanded Edition Hardcover Fine Fine Collectible 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall
Cloth, gilt, ix, 265 pp., illus. (some col.), ports., biblio., index; 25 cm. AS NEW. Dust jacket protected in a mylar book cover. OVERSIZE! No priority/air, except by special arrangement. "This captivating book presents a uniquely comprehensive cultural history of cabaret, where the most radical of artists, poets, writers, musicians, and theater directors have gathered since 1881. Lisa Appignanesi takes us to the original cabaret - the smoke-filled rooms of the Chat Noir in Paris that served as a meeting place for the avant-garde and a laboratory of subversion against the establishment. She then follows the journey of the cabaret across Europe and to the United States, tracing each development in cabaret history to the present day. This much revised and updated edition of Appignanesi's classic work is enriched with materials that have become more accessible in the post-Soviet era. It also features a variety of new illustrations from both East and West. The book provides a lively look at all aspects of cabaret, where art and entertainment join to mock and provoke, and where radical artistic, literary, and political ideas have found expression for more than 120 years. / Lisa Appignanesi is a writer and broadcaster. She is the author of many books, widely translated, including the acclaimed Freud's Women (with John Forrester), a portrait of Simone de Beauvoir, the highly praised memoir Losing the Dead, and the novel The Memory Man, as well as such best-selling thrillers as Sanctuary and The Dead of Winter. She has made and presented a variety of programs for radio and television in Great Britain and France. She is a Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres." - Publisher.

Out of Eden: Essays on Modern Art
Berkeley, CA University of California Press 1993 0520084322 / 9780520084322 1st Paperback Very Good 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall
257 pp., illus. (some col.), biblio., index; 24 cm. Near fine. Tight, clean copy. Light edgewear to wraps, one leaf dogeared. First paperback edition. "Out of Eden presents the rigorous investigations and musings of a poet-essayist on the ways in which modern artists have confronted and transfigured the realist tradition of representation. Di Piero pursues his theme with an autobiographical force and immediacy. He fixes his attention on painters and photographers as disparate as Cezanne, Boccioni, Pollock, Warhol, Edward Weston, and Robert Frank. There is indeed a satisfying sweep to this collection: Matisse, Giacometti, Morandi, Bacon, the Tuscan Macchiaioli of the late nineteenth century, the Futurists of the early modern period, and the American pop painters. Di Piero's analysis of modern images also probes the relation between new kinds of image making and transcendence. The author argues that Matisse and Giacometti, for example, continued to exercise the religious imagination even in a desacralized age. And because Di Piero believes that the visual arts and poetry live intimate, coordinate lives, his essays speak of the relation of poetry to forms in art. / W. S. Di Piero is a poet, essayist and frequent contributor to TriQuarterly, The New Criterion, Threepenny Review, and other periodicals. His previous books include The Restorers (1992), The Dog Star (1990), Memory and Enthusiasm (1989) and several translations. He lives in California." - Publisher.

Tekstura: Russian Essays on Visual Culture
Chicago University of Chicago Press 1993 0226951243 / 9780226951249 1st Paperback Fine 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall
xxxi, 231 pp., illus., bib. notes; 23 cm. Tight, clean copy. "Fascinated by the myth of the Russian avant-garde and scornful of official art, the West has been selective in its engagement with Russian visual culture. Yet how do contemporary Russian scholars and critics themselves approach the history of visual culture in the former Soviet Union? Taking its title from a Russian word that can refer to the 'texture' of life, painting, or writing, this anthology assembles thirteen key essays in art history and cultural theory by Russian-language writers. The essays erase boundaries between high and low, official and dissident, avant-garde and socialist realism, art and everyday life. Everything visual is deemed worthy of analysis, whether painting or propaganda banners, architecture or candy wrappers, mass celebrations or urban refuse. Most of the essays appear here in English for the first time. The editors have selected works of the past twenty years by philosophers, literary critics, film scholars, and art historians. Also included are influential earlier essays by Mikhail Bakhtin, V. N. Voloshinov, and Sergei Eisenstein. Compiled for general readers and specialists alike, Tekstura is a valuable resource for anyone interested in Russian and Soviet cultural history or in new theoretical approaches to the visual." - Publisher.
