Levine, Peter The Rabbi of Swat East Lansing, MI Michigan State University Press 1999 0870135171 / 9780870135170 First Edition, First Printing Trade Paperback Fine Collectible SIGNED vii, 268 pp.; 23 cm. PRESENTATION COPY. Signed by the author, with a personalized inscription. "The Rabbi of Swat is a re-imagining of the baseball season of 1927 - the year Babe Ruth hit 60 home runs and led the Yankees to the American League pennant. The hero of the novel, Morrie Ginsberg, pitches for the New York Giants and struggles with his team to win the National League pennant and face the Yankees in the World Series. While the novel follows Ginsberg's exploits, Babe Ruth is also a narrative voice, commenting on the action and revealing his thoughts and emotions. The Rabbi of Swat uses baseball as a template to reflect and explore the immigration experience, religious prejudice, class issues, and the relationship between fathers and sons. It is, in a sense, a coming-of-age novel, as Morrie Ginsberg reconciles his father's expectations, societal pressures, and his own desires to become a man in the new American world. Peter Levine is an historian and his use of period detail enhances the novel's appeal. The reader is, on some level, transported to 1927 - its sounds, sights and smells become an integral part of the story. Simulated newspaper accounts as well as the actual newspaper stories give The Rabbi of Swat an authenticity that grounds the characters and the story. Levine's mixture of fictional characters, such as Ginsberg, with real historical figures like Rogers Hornsby, John McGraw, Arnold Rothstein, and Babe Ruth lends further credence to that authenticity. / Peter Levine is Professor of History and Director of the American Studies program at Michigan State University. He is the author of Ellis Island to Ebbets Field: Sport and the American Jewish Experience." - Publisher. Price:
