Pictorial boards, [56] leaves, chiefly illus.; 31 cm. First published, London: Leadenhall Press, c. 1896. This is the First American Edition. The binding is compromised. Spine ends worn, webbing exposed. Cracked front hinge, with old, acidic tape repair on front endpapers. Illustrated paper label on front board is good, quite bold. Gift inscription/front free endpaper, otherwise unmarked. OVERSIZE! No priority/air, except by special arrangement. The binding and the front matter are flawed, but the plates are in superb condition, with charming illustrations of street urchins by the English caricaturist Phil May (1864-1903). Born near Leeds, in the north of England, he went to London as a teen and lived on the streets, before finding work as an illustrator. He became a regular cartoonist for Punch and Graphic. This album is based upon his personal experiences as a "gutter-snipe."
