3 Gumpert, Lynn, and Rifkin, Ned
Golub
New York New Museum of Contemporary Art 1984 0915557444 / 9780915557448 Soft Cover Very Good Exhibition Catalogue
96 pp., illus. (some col.), biblio.; 20 x 23 cm. Tight, clean copy. Light shelfwear to wraps. A retrospective of painter Leon Golub, at the height of his popularity as a political artist. From mythic paintings in the fifties to activism against the Vietnam War and portraits of political dictators in the seventies, Golub shifted to scenes of political violence and torture in South Africa, Latin America (US-sponsored death squads), and images of white supremacists. Think of him as the Noam Chomsky of the artworld. Misleadingly dubbed a "Neo-Expressionist" in the eighties.
