The German-American painter Richard Lindner (1901-1978) was rediscovered during the Pop art boom of the sixties. A refugee of Nazi Germany, he settled in New York in 1941, and took a teaching post at Pratt Institute and later taught at Yale. His painting has its antecedents in the Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity) of Weimar Germany and the unleashing of frankly erotic (and, in the case of Lindner's art, sadomasochistic) imagery.
